The Dutch alternative rockband Windup Space returns with a new EP. The name of the new record is ‘Endless Sky’ and is a continuation on their latest singles ‘Scared Enough’, ‘Wide-Eyed’ and ‘The Words’. The band celebrates the release with ‘The Endless Sky Sessions’, a series of live video’s on the band’s YouTube channel.
On the four tracks on ‘Endless Sky’, Windup Space showcases a much more hopeful and positive sound compared to their 2019 album ‘Shelter’, without compromising on melancholy. “We always write about events and feelings in our own lives.” says singer and guitarist Menno van Marle. “In the period leading up to ‘Shelter’ I constantly struggled with my mental health, which made for a very heavy and dark album. But this new EP ‘Endless Sky’ is really about recovery and the way upwards.” The title “Endless Sky” is taken from a lyric from one of the songs and symbolizes potential and endless possibilities.
‘Endless Sky’ is the third collaboration with producer Jos Driessen and was recorded in December 2019 and July 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the band decided to postpone the release. “All of our shows were cancelled.” says drummer Steven van Marle. “Releasing new music without playing live shows just didn’t feel right, so we waited for a moment on which there were more opportunities.”
The delay provided the band with the opportunity to re-write some of the material, which caused the lockdown to influence the lyrics. A good example of this is the song ‘Born’. “I wrote this song on my birthday in the beginning of the first hard lockdown.” says Menno. “It was a moment on which I realized that after 26 years of being alive I had not achieved anything more than being by myself on my own birthday. This feeling directly inspired ‘Born’, in which we make sense of this feeling by saying that it’s okay to move at your own pace.”
‘Endless Sky’ by Windup Space is out now on all streaming platforms.
