Charly haze returns with ‘Backfire’, an empowering triumph dedicated to overcoming adversity

For fans of LAUREL, Chvrches and IDER, charly haze returns with new single ‘Backfire’, released on May 26th via Kartel Music Group. Co-written and produced by Adam Bar-Pereg (Benny Sings, Mike Mago), the punchy, ’80s-inspired indie pop track is the third single taken from her upcoming debut EP (slated for this Summer).

The Dutch London-based singer and songwriter launched her artist project in 2020 after a two-year recovery from a traumatic brain injury, caused by a severe car accident. “I was left with neck/back injuries and PCSS (post-concussion syndrome), experiencing a constant sensory overload, memory loss and chronic fatigue. My life was drastically put on hold and there were no guarantees for a full recovery.” Spending most of her time at home, writing songs was a therapeutic way to work through her trauma.

Going into a little more detail about the track’s lyrical meaning, charly adds: ‘’Backfire’ captures the contrast between the darkest days of despair and the fighting spirit; losing control over your body and doing whatever it takes to regain it. However, it is not a sad song; the emphasis lies on perseverance, courage, and invincibility.” Specialist treatment in the US eventually led to full recovery, after which she upped sticks and moved to London for a fresh start. “The tough times have come to an end, but the fighting spirit remains forever.”

For the music video, a physical challenge occurs (again), having teamed up with Dutch contemporary choreographer Anne Suurendonk to tell the story in a routine focusing on the injured body parts (head, neck, and back). The music video will be released a few weeks after the track comes out.
