Melancholic poetry and 808s: De Toegift returns with new single ‘Odysseus’

In De Toegift’s new electronically charged single, we follow Odysseus in his flight from the past and the sea. This is the first, long-awaited new work since the debut album, remix EP, and collaboration with puntjudith.

ODYSSEUS

Shortly after completing the debut album ‘De Toegift,’ Maxim Ventulé – songwriter and frontman – ventured alone towards the tiny Danish island of Fur during the shortest days of winter to isolate himself and work on a film. The journey initially began as a tribute to his great-aunt, who had traveled alone her entire life and then left her collection of slides to him.

“Through her slides, I got closer to her memories. This inspired me to make a similar journey to get closer to her in that way too.”

The alienated snowy landscape, the frozen sea, and the high chalk cliffs of the island inspire the setting of a new story in which the character Odysseus flees his own past and is accompanied by the spirits of his loved ones. The Greek hero has become afraid of the sea and now moves forward in a small white car. The song meanders like a road trip through the melancholic thoughts of Odysseus, wondering if he will ever make it home again.

808s AND POETRY

Odysseus is also a new musical departure for De Toegift. New electronic sounds are explored, showing that the band is eager to further expand its own sonic spectrum. The pulse of a heavy 808 and vocal samples merge with the melancholic instrumentation and poetic lyrics that we have come to expect from De Toegift.
