MORI mixes postrock, folk and metal on their debut album Sails to Oblivion

MORI is a Breda / Amsterdam, Netherlands based postrock band with an unusual line up. Programmed drums, synths and chopped samples (Jorrit) are combined with live instruments such as guitar and trumpet (Tristan) and singing (William). This description might lead one to assume MORI’s sound is industrial, but it is in fact very organic. It has hiphop-based origins, but over time shifted more towards a live-band sound fed by influences found in postrock, metal and folk.

And ‘over time’ does really mean ‘over time’. The band has been working on and off on their 2021 debut album “Sails to Oblivion” since 2009. They wrote and recorded the songs in the same order in which they are now presented on the album’s track list. Along the way it’s narrative unfolded, each song becoming a new chapter. Like it’s protagonist on a laborious journey crossing a mystical island, on “Sails to Oblivion” MORI explored it’s destiny track by track. Into it’s conclusive form. For now, anyway.
